Farmhouse Architectural Style

Built by early Colonial families on agricultural land, these homes were designed and built by homeowners. Not having the resources to hire architects, the designs were simple, unpretentious, and functional.

Building materials were stone, mud, logs and whatever was available on the land. The front of the house was formal space and the back housed the kitchen and staircase to the bedrooms. As more settlers from different regions joined forces to build farmhouses, they began to take on elements of many different architectural styles. Eventually, printed home designs were available so homeowners could choose which style to build and have trains deliver the materials to the land.
