Mediterranean Architectural Style

Very popular in the early 20th century, this style is known for red tile roofs and stucco finishes. Modeled after the Hacienda design, its influences come from Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Today’s Mediterranean homes feature courtyards, balconies and porticos. Often the interiors are accented with multicolored tiles. Tile flooring makes this style popular in the south where the climate is similar to Mediterranean countries. In the 1920s and 1930s, Hollywood movies featured romantic Mediterranean sets, and celebrity magazines showed stars living in Spanish Colonial, Tudor or small castle-like houses, creating the peak period for construction of Mediterranean homes.
